It’s no secret that social media has become one of the biggest networking and marketing outlets today. As a young adult and a recent college graduate, I have to admit that I absolutely love social media. I’m on social media at least half the day if we’re being completely honest. For someone who does not regularly like to watch the news, platforms like Twitter and Instagram give me all the updates I need to keep up with what’s happening in the world. So why is it so important for your business to be present on social media. Here are some reasons why:

1.     Increase traffic.

The ways that social media can increase traffic to your website are endless. You should always make sure that your website is clearly visible so potential customers can find easily find you. Including your website in your Twitter and Instagram biography. Another way to increase traffic is to share your blog on social networking sites. Sharing your content to popular sites helps to increase engagement, search engine optimization and the likelihood that more people will view your posts and visit your website.

Even the old-fashioned word-of-mouth method is effective in increasing site traffic. Start referring your customers to your website when they have general questions like “where are you located?” and “what is your purpose?”. Don’t forget to use a call to action. Let people know that they can follow you on social platforms and engage with the company like sharing relevant information on Twitter or Instagram.

2.    Keep up with the forever evolving trends.

The trends on social media are constantly changing. What’s popular today might not be popular next week. It is important to keep up with all the emerging trends in order to better appeal to your audience and to make sure you’re producing content they want to see. Some ways you can keep up with trends on social media are checking out the explore page on Instagram, popular hashtags on Twitter, and joining groups on LinkedIn for a more professional route. I have personally found a lot of awesome businesses by simply scrolling through the explore page on Instagram. These things can help you be on top of all the popular happenings throughout multiple social media channels so that way you keep producing the content that your customers want to see.

3.    Everyone is on social media.

Whether you’re just on LinkedIn for professional purposes or Instagram and Facebook to share your life with your friends and family, almost everyone is active on social media. 42% of the world population currently uses some form of social media, and that number is steadily growing. It is important as a business, whether you’re a small business or a large corporation, to be active on social media. Social media is your outlet to most of your customers and your competitors. You can keep up with what your customers like and dislike and how you measure up to the competition. Make sure that you are present on multiple platforms. This way different demographic groups of people can find you on the site they prefer more. For instance, if someone told you about a popular restaurant that you just have to try, but you wanted to see their Instagram for pictures of dishes and the interior and exterior of the building, but you do not have an Instagram. This may turn away some potential customers if they can’t find you and see for themselves if they even want to bother visiting your location.

4.    Free Marketing.

Most applications are free like Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc. All you have to do is go to your app store on your mobile device and click download and voila! You have a new app. It’s that simple. This makes it so much easier to be on more than one social media channel to obtain to all your followers. Start with the two most popular mobile apps: Instagram and Twitter. Almost everyone I know has an account with both of these sites and uses them frequently. Some use it for enjoyment and others for business. No matter what you use them for, they are easy to utilize and definitely a big help. Social media has made everything accessible right at your fingertips. So why wouldn’t you start and Instagram page or a Twitter account? The more channels you have, the better your following and the better chance you have at increasing that following and gaining loyal customers.

5.    Builds brand loyalty.

Brand loyalty is something all business want to create among a customer. They want to convert them from a part-time customer to a full-time customer. Using social media is a great way to build that brand loyalty among customers. To do this, you need to actively engage with your customers.

Participating in fun promotional ideas like giveaways and contests give you a chance to expand your audience and letting the customers have a little fun; I mean who doesn’t love free stuff, I know I do! One of the main goals trying to be accomplished by a business is to have repeat customers and gain more in the process. The more positive and relevant content you give out to your customers, the more they are to buy your products or use your services. They may even tell their friends and family how great your business is. Those are great opportunities build that brand loyalty and tweak your marketing strategies as they appeal to your customers.

6.    Networking Opportunities

Social media is a great way to network with local businesses and with professionals within your area. Most people think of networking as mainly within the college community to help recent graduates get a job after graduation or networking with old friends to help them in a new career path. Social media is like a big web of different platforms. There are so many different ways to come together and share ideas and common interests to help your business. Many companies do collaborations to bring together both their audiences to promote what both companies have to offer. This gives different customers a chance to check out a similar business to one they already take an interest in.

7.    Connect to your community.

Utilizing social media is an excellent way to connect to your community. Especially if you’re a small business, it is vital to be able to connect to your community and get to know the people in it. This gives you a better chance to build brand loyalty and turn one-time customers into regular customers. Getting to know your customers on a personal level makes them feel like more like a friend than a customer. It’s makes them feel like family and to know that you genuinely care about them and their business will make them want to come back time and time again. Hosting community activities like having a booth at a local gathering and hosting special events at your business is a good way to be physically interactive with customers. This give you a chance to properly introduce yourself to your community and they can put a name with face.

8.    Engagement.

Being constantly active on social media is a great way to stay engaged with customers. Channels like Instagram and Snapchat have stories where you can post different inclusive content like behind the scenes of a work day and how the business operates. You could also do question and answer sessions to see what customers want to see from the company. Social media can also help increase the engagement between customers and the social media platform they are using. This meaning increasing the number of likes, shares, and comments among customers. By increasing these, businesses can measure how effective their social media campaigns are and alter them as necessary.

Be sure to post content that users want to interact with. For example, retail companies can do polls on Instagram stories that include customers helping chose their newest campaign or new pieces for upcoming seasons. Customers like this because they feel like they are a part of the company and it shows that the company values their opinion. It makes them feel appreciated.

9.    Boost Sales

You heard that right, social media can help boost company sales. The more people hear about your company, the better your chances are at boosting your sales. People see your posts and if they see something that interests them, they will share it. Then other people see the post that their friend shared, and it might interest them as well. Next thing you know, more and more people are buying your products which means more money!

Other ways to generate more revenue is working with social media influencers. Influencers typically have a couple thousand followers and companies contact them to work with them to promote their products. The influencer then posts the products, or products, on their Instagram page exposing it to thousands of users. This gives the company more exposure and a wide range of potential customers.
