What All Truly Great Company Know (Mavericks at Work)

Reflection notes Upon reading Mavericks at Work by William C. Taylor and Polly LaBarre

about the book

It’s quite a lengthy book with tons of great examples throughout applying the principles they talk through. There is some gold in the book for sure, but unless you’re a hard-core reader, I’d suggest listening to the audiobook on the go instead.

  • Just think about the customer.

  • If you do everything like everybody else, don’t expect to be any better than them.

  • Reject short-term business that distracts your company from its long-term mission.

  • Nobody is as smart as everybody - Crowdsourcing or using the “hive.”

  • The best people in any industry are motivated by passion.

  • Shift your thinking from “problem-solving” to “solution finding” this will keep you from wasting valuable time and resources.

  • Keep your focus narrow.

  • Great People = key to success

  • Ask, “Why would great people want to work here?”

  • Pass on good people

  • Give people more than a job to show up for. Give them a cause.

  • It’s a significant risk NOT to innovate.
